Gzip and DropCompression allows the size of certain file types to be reduced by as much as 50-70%. This obviously means the time taken to transfer files and the bandwidth consumed also reduces by a similar percentage. When you use the Gzip compression option of Thin Upload Pro, the original files are left unchanged. Instead the applet will create a compressed copy of the file in the temporary folder and it is the temporary file that is uploaded. After upload has been completed the temp files will be deleted. Thin Upload Pro will not gzip files that have already been compressed. If the applet encounters such files they will be uploaded as they are without being compressed again. This is because gzip compression of already compressed files do not lead to a reduction in file size. The applet recognizes files with the following extensions as compressed types: gzip, zip, bz, bz2, gz and tgz. |
